About MRFA
In 1994, the Snapper bag limit was cut from 10 to 3 and the commercial catch remained untouched. Nobody stood up for the recreational fisher – there was no “voice.”
MRFA was formed in 1994 to represent all recreational fishers of the Marlborough Sounds and ensure the fishery is managed in a healthy and sustainable way.
Since then, MRFA have successfully:
-
Advocated against the Blue Code Ban of 2007
-
Ensured the abandonment of the Blue Cod slot rule.
-
Argued against the destruction of scallop beds from forestry siltation and dredging.
-
Opposed King Salmon in the Inner Sounds, advocating for an open-ocean approach.
-
Submitted to Marlborough District Council’s Environment Plan.
-
Sat on a committee established by Ministry of Fisheries for the future of Scallops in Marlborough.
-
Defended against bans and reduction of catch numbers (some not even publicly noted).
