Since 1994, we have participated in nearly every fishing issue in Marlborough.
Marlborough Recreational Fishers Association.
In 1994, the Snapper bag limit was cut from 10 to 3 and the commercial catch remained untouched.
There was no “voice” for the recreational fisher.
MRFA was formed in 1994 to ensure recreational fishers were heard in Marlborough and ensure the fishery is managed in a healthy and sustainable way.
Since then, MRFA have successfully:
-
Advocated against the Blue Code Ban of 2007
-
Ensured the abandonment of the Blue Cod slot rule.
-
Argued against the destruction of scallop beds from forestry siltation and dredging.
-
Opposed King Salmon in the Inner Sounds, advocating for an open-ocean approach.
-
Submitted to Marlborough District Council’s Environment Plan.
-
Sat on a committee established by Ministry of Fisheries for the future of Scallops in Marlborough.
-
Defended against bans and reduction of catch numbers (some not even publicly noted).
With more resources to lobby local and government politicians, Commercial entities are getting stronger.
Join us to ensure the Marlborough Sounds are a fair, sustainable and healthy marine fishery.
For only $10/year you can join us too…
